The article describes how disaster medicine is a growing field that focuses on caring for people during emergencies outside of normal hospitals. Although there are fellowships to train doctors in this area, disaster medicine is not yet officially recognized as its own specialty in the United States. There are no accredited programs just for disaster medicine, but some emergency and EMS training includes it. The study looks at what these fellowships offer and how they are organized across the country.
