The illness causes swelling and mucus in the small airways of the lungs, making it hard to breathe. It usually starts with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, and fever. Most cases are mild and get better on their own with rest and fluids. Sometimes, children may need medical care if they have trouble breathing or are not eating well.
