About
This article examines pediatric surgeries during U.S. Navy humanitarian missions from 2006 to 2018 in Southeast Asia. It describes how the USNS Mercy ship performed over 1,100 surgeries on children, focusing on essential procedures like cleft lip and hernia repairs. Most operations were successful with low complication rates. The study highlights the need for more resources and training in these regions to improve surgical care for children. It also suggests that future missions should focus on teaching local doctors essential surgical skills to help build long-term healthcare capacity in developing countries.
