AED Use for Children and Infants
Access Resources
About
This skill sheet explains how to use an AED for children and infants. It describes turning on the AED, exposing the chest, and attaching pads. For infants under 1 year, use pediatric pads if available; otherwise, adult pads are safe. For children 8 or younger or under 55 pounds, follow similar guidelines with specific pad placements. Always follow manufacturer instructions and ensure everyone stands clear during analysis and shock delivery. Never use pediatric settings on older or heavier children as it won't deliver enough shock. Begin CPR immediately after a shock is delivered if needed until further instructions are given.
