This tip sheet provides safety tips for outdoor workers to protect themselves from stinging insects like bees, wasps, hornets, and fire ants. It describes first aid steps if stung: wash the area, remove the stinger without squeezing it, apply ice, and avoid scratching. To prevent stings, wear light-colored clothes and avoid perfumes. If attacked by multiple insects or if one is in your vehicle, stay calm or run indoors. For fire ants: rub them off quickly and seek medical help for severe reactions. Workers with allergies should carry an epinephrine autoinjector and wear medical ID jewelry.
