Availability of Pediatric Inpatient Services in the United States

This study analyzed data from 4720 United States (US) hospitals between 2008 and 2018 to assess changes in pediatric inpatient unit capacity and access. The findings show a decrease in pediatric inpatient units and beds, with an increase in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds, especially in children's hospitals. Rural areas saw larger declines in pediatric beds. Many states experienced reduced access to pediatric inpatient services, affecting one-quarter of US children. Units with low volume and no PICU were most likely to close. The study suggests the need for policy improvements to address these trend
