About
This article explores the impact of Hurricane Sandy on families caring for children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) in areas affected and unaffected by the disaster. The research compares emergency preparedness and post-traumatic stress effects post-disaster, focusing on glycemic control, insulin regimens, and socioeconomic status (SES). Results show that despite disparities in SES, families were generally well prepared for the hurricane and managing diabetes. The study highlights the importance of disaster preparedness in chronic disease management, especially for vulnerable populations like children with diabetes. The findings suggest a need for interventional studies to maintain glycemic control in children with T1DM following major disasters.
