About
This study examines a triage-based protocol in a pediatric emergency department to improve care for children with gastroenteritis. Nurses assessed dehydration and initiated oral rehydration therapy (ORT) and ondansetron early. Results showed increased use of ondansetron, faster treatment times, more documented ORT, and reduced intravenous fluid use without affecting hospital stays or return visits. The protocol helped manage mild to moderate dehydration effectively by using ORT instead of IV fluids. It highlights the importance of nurse-initiated care at triage for better outcomes in treating gastroenteritis in young children aged 6 months to 5 years.
