    About

Hurricane Maria's aftermath continues to impact healthcare facilities nationwide as the shortage of IV fluids poses challenges in administering antimicrobials. To mitigate this crisis, strategies like IV to PO conversions and first-dose IV push antimicrobials are crucial. While certain conditions necessitate IV antibiotics, many infections can be effectively treated with PO medications, conserving IV fluids and reducing ED stays. Some antimicrobials can be administered via IV push, saving time and resources. Notably, beta-lactam antibiotics may benefit from prolonged infusions to enhance efficacy. Collaborative efforts and innovative solutions are key in navigating drug shortages, emphasizing the importance of team-based care and acknowledging the contributions of all involved stakeholders.
