    About

The World Shared Practice Forum featured Dr. Traci Wolbrink and the International pediatric sepsis definition task force discussing the development of sepsis criteria. Led by Dr. Luregn Schlapbach and Dr. Scott Watson, the task force aimed to address the challenges of characterizing sepsis in children. Formed in 2017-18, the task force included diverse experts globally. They conducted a three-phase approach involving a survey, literature review/meta-analysis, and validation. The Phoenix criteria for pediatric sepsis and septic shock were developed and named in Phoenix, Arizona, symbolizing rebirth and saving lives. The criteria focus on organ dysfunction and can be used for research and standardization globally. The discussion also touched on resource settings, screening tools, special populations, and practical application in clinical settings. Key Points from the Task force led by Dr. Schlapbach and Dr. Watson to develop sepsis criteria include: Three-phase approach: survey, literature review/meta-analysis, validation; Phoenix criteria named for rebirth and saving lives; Focus on organ dysfunction, standardization, and research; Considerations for resource settings, screening tools, and special populations; and Practical application in clinical settings and future research areas.
