About
This article examines the impact of exposure to climate-related disasters on adolescent mental distress. Using data from over 38,000 high school students in 22 urban public school districts, the study found a positive association between increased disaster exposure and mental distress. Adolescents exposed to more disaster days had higher odds of experiencing mental distress, especially within the past 2-5 years. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the effects of climate change on mental health and the need for further research to improve preparedness for worsening mental health outcomes among adolescents in the face of increasingly severe weather events.
