About
This article discusses the response of a level 1 pediatric emergency department in South Bronx, NY during the 2009 H1N1 influenza outbreak. The study aimed to efficiently identify and treat patients with influenza-like illnesses while managing the increased patient census. By reorganizing patient flow and implementing staging measures, the department successfully handled the surge in visits without significant increases in walkout rates or 7-day asthma revisits. The results showed a substantial rise in ED visits during the outbreak, with no significant differences in admission rates compared to the previous year. The study highlights the importance of preparedness and resource allocation during public health emergencies.
