About
This retrospective review provides lessons learned after an evacuation exercise in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to a simulated catastrophe. Infants were evacuated horizontally and then vertically to a temporary area for transport to other hospitals. Effective communication, essential personnel, flexibility, and creativity were key in disaster management. Developing and practicing contingency plans can help minimize harm to vulnerable patients during emergencies.
