Hospital disaster preparedness definitions are unclear in literature, causing discrepancies between self-reported and objectively assessed preparedness. This observational study compared self-reported surge capacity data from hospitals before the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa with on-site assessments. Contact persons from a prior drill underreported surge capacity in various hospital units compared to the on-site team's evaluations.
