This article discusses the importance of assessing and surging pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) resources in New York City (NYC) during disasters. It highlights the lack of detailed surge capacity plans in NYC hospitals with PICUs, hindering their ability to reach full surge capacity. The article emphasizes the need to identify pediatric resources in each PICU hospital before a disaster to set appropriate surge capacity goals and acquire necessary additional resources. It proposes a NYC PICU surge stratification system to assist physicians, hospitals, and city agencies in regional surge capacity planning for critical pediatric patients, focusing on clinical criteria and resources.
