Global awareness of the mental health effects of disasters is growing. Challenges in preparing communities and a lack of emphasis on relationships and organizational capacity have shifted policy focus to community resiliency as a vital public health strategy for disaster response. The authors highlight an approach to community engagement for enhancing mental health services, disaster recovery, and preparedness through a community resiliency lens, developed through their work in Los Angeles County and New Orleans.
