This review aims to inform orthopaedic surgeons of opportunities to serve when disaster strikes, focusing on requirements and challenges involved. The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) was established in 1987 to coordinate emergency health services during crises, involving various government and private agencies. NDMS has evolved to include Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) with volunteer medical personnel. Specialized orthopaedic surgeons play a key role in disaster planning and response. The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) also contributes to disaster planning and response.
