School Interventions After the Joplin Tornado

This study was conducted six months after the 2011 Joplin, Missouri tornado to look at ways in which schools intervened to meet children's needs. It found that schools quickly reached out to all enrolled students for support and recovery services, and despite severe damage, they reopened promptly to provide a safe environment and extra help. Summer school focused on child safety and emotional well-being, and the following school year started on time in temporary facilities. Teachers received training to assist students and staff with anxiety or depression, while counselors offered small-group counseling. Schools played a crucial role in post-disaster recovery efforts, but more research is needed to enhance future interventions.
