About
This study conducted a survey in May 2013 among 1,234 healthcare workers from 2 hospitals in Joplin, Missouri (MO), where a severe tornado occurred in 2011. It looked at how many workers came to work, their willingness to work during disasters, and their preparedness. Most workers showed resilience by reporting to work after the tornado. They were more willing to work during future earthquakes or tornadoes compared to before the event. Many had childcare needs during the disaster; if hospitals offered alternative childcare, more would have worked. The findings help disaster planners understand healthcare worker attitudes for better emergency plans in the future.
