This review provides a summary of the Fukushima nuclear reactor accident in Japan in 2011, focusing on radiation effects on the thyroid and prevention strategies. It describes how radiation from the accident was much less than Chernobyl, leading to lower thyroid doses in children. Despite this, a higher rate of thyroid cancer has been found in children near Fukushima due to increased screening. Over 280,000 kids were checked, with 90 diagnosed with cancer. The review compares Fukushima and Chernobyl's effects on the thyroid and highlights improved ultrasound techniques for detecting issues early.
