About
This article discusses the impact of emergency childcare (EC) needs on health care workers' ability and likelihood to work during a pandemic compared to an earthquake. An online survey was distributed to employees of an urban pediatric hospital to assess their childcare needs during disaster scenarios. Results showed that childcare needs would affect work decisions more during a pandemic than an earthquake. Only a small percentage of employees had an EC plan in place. The study highlighted the importance of including provisions for EC in hospital disaster planning, as there is a high anticipated use of hospital-provided EC among hospital workers.
