About
This study surveyed all households of children enrolled in Mississippi's Harrison County School District (HCSD) after a 4-day school closure in preparation for Hurricane Isaac in 2012. The response rate was 28.4%. It found that about half of households faced challenges such as uncertainty about the closure's duration, lost income, and difficulty arranging childcare. Adults working outside the home, especially the main earners, were most affected by income loss, but paid leave helped mitigate the impact. Recommendations include offering childcare options and paid leave or remote work arrangements to alleviate financial strain during extended closures.
