This article analyzes Italy's response to the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus outbreak based on the 2006 National Pandemic Preparedness and Response Plan. It discusses the activities for surveillance, containment, and mitigation of the pandemic, highlighting lessons learned. Between July 2009 and May 2010, Italy saw around 5.6 million cases of influenza-like illness, with about 2,000 confirmed pandemic cases. Hospital admissions included 1,106 cases, with 532 in intensive care and 260 deaths. Vaccination coverage was low at 4%, partly attributed to communication challenges. The article emphasizes the importance of health professionals' active engagement in future pandemic preparedness and response efforts.
