About
This one-page editorial looks at both the good and bad lessons learned during the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident that followed in 2011. Pediatric health issues, including childhood obesity, emerged in the affected communities. A rise in obesity among elementary school students in Rikuzentakata City was found due to a sedentary lifestyle in temporary housing. The decrease in play areas, converted to housing, contributed to this issue. Children are especially vulnerable during disasters, emphasizing the importance of lessons learned from this event, with infectious diseases like influenza posing additional health risks.
