About
This article assesses the preparedness planning for an influenza pandemic by modeling pediatric surge capacity in healthcare facilities and pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) over time. It highlights the importance of PICUs in healthcare provision for children during a flu pandemic. The study explores various scenarios through detailed analyses and modeling techniques to determine if PICU capacity would be sufficient. The findings suggest that, with proper indications and decision rules, most children needing PICU care, including those with non flu-related conditions, can be accommodated during a pandemic. The article emphasizes the need for adaptable preparedness plans for future influenza pandemics.
