About
This article discusses the critical role of safe schools in protecting children and staff from the immediate threats and long-term impacts of disasters. Drawing on global disaster experiences and the United Nations Comprehensive School Safety Framework, the article emphasizes three key pillars of school safety: Safe Learning Facilities, Disaster Management, and Risk Reduction and Resilience Education. It also proposes a potential fourth pillar focusing on schools' role in post-disaster mental health assessment and intervention for children. The article highlights schools as essential spaces for mental health support post-disaster, exploring the interconnectedness between schools, child mental health, and family recovery. Recommendations are provided to enhance research and practices for ensuring school safety and promoting the well-being of children in future disasters.
