About
This article examines the impact of Hurricane Katrina on perinatal health, focusing on pregnant and postpartum women. Short-term disruptions in obstetric and neonatal care post-Katrina led to increased adverse birth outcomes in highly exposed women, such as preterm birth and low birth weight. Rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression were similar to other Katrina-exposed individuals. Health behaviors like smoking and breastfeeding were negatively affected, while nutrition choices were limited. Overall, postdisaster concerns and health outcomes for pregnant and postpartum women resembled those of the general Katrina-exposed population. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing peripartum care and support post-disaster.
