About
Agitation can be a common feature in patients presenting to emergency departments for treatment. Agitated pediatric patients impact emergency department operations and require dedicated care from emergency department staff. Untreated agitation can negatively impact the patient, their family, emergency department personnel, and potentially other patients. In this learning module, we will present an evidence-based approach to managing the agitated pediatric patient in the emergency department. Learning Objectives: * Describe approaches to assessing and identifying clinical features of pediatric agitation in the emergency department. * Understand common underlying causes for pediatric agitation. * Describe "least restrictive: means of intervention for pediatric agitation including non-pharmacological interventions (behavioral de-escalation, calming interventions, and environmental modification). * Understand when the use of pharmacological interventions and physical restraints are indicated for pediatric agitation.Tags
