About
This study summarizes the health needs of approximately 30,000 displaced persons who resided in shelters in eight states following Hurricane Katrina. The analysis of medical encounter forms revealed that many received acute, preventive/chronic care, durable medical equipment, and prescription medication. The findings emphasized the importance of strengthening healthcare planning and response for sheltered persons, particularly in providing primary and preventive care services. The study highlighted the common need for pharmaceuticals, durable medical equipment like glasses and glucose meters, and referrals to various healthcare providers, indicating the necessity for comprehensive healthcare support beyond the shelter setting.
