About
This article describes how the New York City Pediatric Disaster Coalition (PDC) was created to help hospitals prepare for emergencies with many injured children. The PDC worked with 15 hospitals to make plans for extra pediatric critical care beds by focusing on space, staff, equipment, and systems. They added 153 potential surge beds and tested these plans in seven hospitals through drills. The goal is to show the importance of planning for child-related disasters and offer a model that other cities can use to improve their own emergency preparedness efforts.
