About
This article investigates the level of pediatric involvement in disaster drills conducted by healthcare organizations, as JCAHO requires. The study analyzed 49 after-action reports to assess pediatric victim participation. Findings revealed that hospitals with larger bed capacities were more likely to include children in exercises. However, issues such as lack of parent-child identification systems, communication challenges, inadequate pediatric resources, and training gaps were identified. The study concludes that while many organizations conduct disaster exercises, there is a significant gap in addressing pediatric needs. Urgent action is required to prioritize pediatric emergency planning for the safety of this vulnerable population.
