About
This study was conducted to assess the emergency preparedness of families with children who rely on medical devices during power outages. An 8-point checklist was used to evaluate preparedness for a 72-hour home power outage. Families completed the checklist at different time points following admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Results showed improved preparedness after an ICU-based planning intervention. It was concluded that families of technology-dependent children have significant disaster-preparedness needs that can be improved with inpatient interventions.
