About
This article examines the preparedness of prehospital emergency medical services agencies in the United States to care for children in mass-casualty events. The study found that while most agencies have plans for mass-casualty events, only a small percentage have specific plans for pediatric victims. Furthermore, many agencies lack provisions for special healthcare needs and pediatric-specific triage protocols. Despite some participation in disaster drills, many agencies do not include pediatric victims in their drills. The findings highlight significant deficiencies in preparedness for children in mass-casualty events, emphasizing the need for improved planning and coordination.
