About
This article highlights the importance of rapid identification and protection of separated children after disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. A survey tool used at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma helped identify 36 out of 254 children separated from their legal guardians. Interestingly, answering 'no' to whether the accompanying adult was the guardian before the disaster was a strong predictor of being listed as 'missing'. Fortunately, all children listed as 'missing' were successfully reunited with their guardians, emphasizing the significance of proper care and reunification efforts.
