About
This article examines the response of Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem to terrorist multiple- or mass-casualty events between 1983 and 2004. The study focuses on the role of the intensive care unit (ICU) in handling patients after such events. A total of 875 patients were treated after 31 incidents, with 4.7% requiring ICU admission. The ICU patients mostly suffered from blast lung injuries, intestinal blast injuries, and ruptured tympanic membranes. Surgical procedures were performed on 23 patients, with 73% needing mechanical ventilation. One patient died due to a delay in diagnosing an intestinal blast injury. The ICU's role in TMCE response is highlighted.
