About
This study looks at how well hospitals in New York can handle a sudden increase in patients during disasters. It describes that hospitals are expected to manage 500 new patients per million people, but often lack enough beds, especially for children. The research found that on average, there is room for 268 new child and 555 adult patients per million people. After the September 11 attacks, changes in hospital admissions helped reduce occupancy by 11%. The study suggests changing hospital care standards to better serve children during mass-casualty events.
