    Suicidality and self-harm (S/SH) rates in the pediatric population are increasing at alarming rates and the emergency care system has become a safety net for treating pediatric mental health issues. By completing this interactive course, learners will: * understand the epidemiology and risk factors of suicidal and self-harm patients, elements of effective screening and assessment tools for suicidal, and self-harm patients. * identify principles of environmental and patient safety required when caring for suicidal and self-harm patients. * know how to develop safe discharge plans for suicidal and self-harm patients. Pediatric-specific education for prehospital and hospital-based care team members on the S/SH patient is limited. Healthcare providers often use adult mental health policies and procedures and screening and assessment tools for use on S/SH pediatric patients. This is compounded by inconsistent or absent education on pediatric S/SH, and unnecessarily transferring/boarding pediatric patients rather than discharging. This course aims to provide evidence-based education to improve the management of pediatric patients presenting with S/SH. While broadly applicable for many contexts, community rural EDs and prehospital agencies may find the content especially helpful to address the health inequities they may face with limited resources. This course aims to improve the pediatric emergency readiness of health care systems by helping learners develop their skills in managing pediatric suicide in prehospital, emergency department, and post-emergency situations. This course consists of five modules on the following topics: 1) Background: The epidemiology of pediatric suicide 2) Prehospital Considerations: Prehospital transport considerations of children with suicidality 3) Emergency Department Screening and Assessment: Effective suicide screening and assessment tools 4) Emergency Department Treatment: Building an environment of safety and respect 5) Post-Emergency Department Considerations: Developing a safe disposition plan This course consists of five models each requiring approximately 20 - 30 minutes of effort. The total course effort is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes for users that complete all activities and skim the readings. Some users may take longer depending on how much time they spend with the readings. Note: This is a self-paced, voluntary learning module. You will not receive continuing education credit or a certificate of completion upon completing the course from EIIC/PPN. However, your organization or EMS/fire rescue agency may provide continuing education credit for completing this learning activity.
