About
This article examines the impact of a severe disaster, a fire in a café in Volendam, Netherlands, on the mental health and substance use of adolescents. The study compares data from adolescents in Volendam, directly affected by the disaster, with data from control populations. Findings show that Volendam adolescents experienced larger increases in clinical scores for total problems and alcohol misuse compared to controls. The study highlights the need for mental health interventions post-disaster, focusing on addressing anxiety, depression, thought problems, aggression, and alcohol abuse among affected adolescents and their peers.
