About
The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) is a self-administered tool derived from the PRIME-MD diagnostic instrument for mental disorders. Specifically, the PHQ-9 module assesses depression severity based on DSM-IV criteria. A study with 6,000 patients revealed that higher PHQ-9 scores correlated with decreased functional status, increased symptom-related difficulty, sick days, and healthcare visits. A PHQ-9 score > or =10 demonstrated 88% sensitivity and specificity for major depression. Overall, the PHQ-9 is considered a reliable and valid measure of depression severity with clinical and research utility.
