In this article, the authors share their initial lessons in pandemic preparedness during the COVID-19 outbreak in Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre, a tertiary referral hospital for the Southern Region of Malawi. Covered topics include the following: embedded research, staff well being and communication, and partnership leveraging. Research was done to understand COVID-19's impact on children, finding that most were not severely affected by the virus itself but faced other health risks due to service disruptions during the pandemic.
