About
In this 4-minute video, Niki Shimko, Transport Team Manager for Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida, shares her experiences involving the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) evacuation during Hurricane Ian in 2022. The hospital lost water pressure and had to evacuate patients, including 61 neonatal babies. Teams from across the country helped with aircraft and ground support, bringing water and food. The staff worked tirelessly despite not knowing if their own families were safe. Special equipment was needed for the tiny babies, some weighing less than a pound. The teamwork saved lives, showing gratitude for all who helped during this challenging time as they continue to recover from the storm's impact. This resource is related to a PPN podcast titled "Everything Must Go (Part 1)."
