The evolution of pediatric surge in the United States, from theory to practice, is crucial as disasters, whether natural or human-made, increase in frequency. Children, being a vulnerable group, require specialized care during such events. The recent COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent respiratory surge highlighted both progress and obstacles in handling a surge of pediatric patients. Analyzing pediatric surge with the 4 S's (space, staff, stuff, and systems/structures) framework reveals gaps at various levels, aiding in preparedness.
