About
In 2022, during a time with a lot of viruses going around, there were more kids than usual going to the emergency room. This caused overcrowding and made it hard to find intensive care beds for kids across the country. This meant that some really sick kids had to stay longer at the local hospital instead of being transferred. The authors of this article talk about what happened at a hospital in Massachusetts during this busy time, like the increase in kids needing critical care and how long they needed it. To deal with this, the leaders at the children's emergency room used a plan for emergencies that focused on space, staff, supplies, and structure. They worked with other hospital departments, local doctors, and emergency services to come up with and carry out a plan for handling the surge in kids needing care. In this report, they share the plan they used, the actions they took, and what helped or got in the way of making it work at their hospital. This information could help other hospitals facing similar challenges.Tags
