About
Recent disasters, including hurricanes, mass shootings, floods, and the COVID-19 pandemic, highlight the importance of discussing children's unique needs in such situations. Around 25-30% of those affected in disasters are children, requiring special care due to biological, social, and ethical differences. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, there has been increased focus on pediatric disaster preparedness, but some recommendations from the 2010 National Commission on Children and Disasters are still pending. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought new challenges and advancements in pediatric emergency response. This article offers an overview of pediatric disaster response, recent progress, current challenges, recommendations, and potential future research areas.Tags
